Camera Club COMs and Golds

25th March 2009
It was the West Rand Photographic Club evening last night and I was thrilled to receive two COM's and two Gold's. For those of you that don't know how PSSA scoring works basically as a 3* Member I need to get 13 out of 15 or higher for a COM or a 10 out of 15 or higher to get a Gold. Scoring is from three judges each scoring out of 5.

Last night's set subject was food and I already knew what a challenge traditional food photography in the ilk of magazines and cookbooks to be, so I decided to try an alternative and submitted the following composition - 'The News Cafe' which was well received with a COM.

My other COM of the night came from this photograph of a young girl called Emma which I had photographed quite a while ago. I've always had a hunch that 'Easter Emma' was one of my better photo's and one that I've been really proud of (even more so considering what the original looks like!). So thanks Emma for this award.

My other two submitted photographs included my 'Verkleurmannetjie' and 'Mapogo Stare' which received Gold. Two photographs that I personally love partly because of the wonderful photographic time I had at Nkorho Lodge in the Sabi Sands shooting these. I'm going back to Sabi Sands - Elephant Plains in June this year with my wife Wendy and we absolutely cannot wait!

Thanks Camera Club. It was a fun and informative evening with some wonderful photography on display to provide some much needed inspiration. We had a chance to see some wonderful motorsports photography from two talented guys and also see some amazing photography from Antartica from a lucky club member. Next month the set-subject is photo-journalism so that is a fresh new challenge - one which I'm looking forward to.
