New Equipment

Thanks to my wife needing a flash for her work photo's and me needing a birthday present I was recently able to get a couple of new items added to my camera collection (as if I really needed anything more!).

The first item is a Canon 580 EX II flash.

The 580EX II extends the development of Canon's flagship flash, the 580EX (which Wendy now has).
Newly designed the flash is now weather-sealed to bring it in line with the 1D range of camera's. Improvements to body strength and a much better battery door improve the overall design. Recycling time is 20% shorter (and even better with the CP-E4; see below) and is now completely silent (this was a bit disconcerting at first as the uniquitous whine has disappeared). Other improvements include better wireless communication and an improved foot and locking mechanism when attaching it to the camera.
Overall the 580EX II has proved to be a worthy successor to the 580EX and produces accurate consistent results.

To add to this I was also able to get a Canon CP-E4 Battery pack to support the flash.

The battery pack is fairly straightforward but allows you to add another 8 rechargeable batteries to your flash which allows for more shots and faster (much faster) recyling time (the interval between the flash discharging and the time taken for it to fully recharge).

Two very nice pieces of equipment which I used recently when I was at Pilanesberg and Marievale and I must say I was very satisfied with both. They are vastly over-priced mind you but nice to have.
